Final Exam: June 6 (1:00 to 3:00)
Welcome to Chemistry 355. The first class meeting of the quarter will be Tuesday, March 28, at 8:00 AM. We will meet in Chemistry Building 385. The agenda for this first day will be a review of safety policies and an introduction to Experiment 51. NOTE CAREFULLY: There is an experiment assigned for this first day! We will be doing an identification of solubility unknowns. (noticed posted on March 23, 2006)
Special Notice: In order to be
enrolled in this course, each student will be required to take and pass
a laboratory safety quiz. This quiz is an on-line quiz, consisting
of 25 multiple choice questions. It is your responsibility to take
and pass the safety quiz on your own time, during its scheduled hours.
The absolute deadline for completion of this requirement is Thursday,
April 8 at 10:00 AM. If you cannot successfully pass the quiz,
you will fail or be dropped from this course!

You have enrolled in a special
experimental section of Chemistry 355 that features experiment intended to
demonstrate the principles and techniques of "Green Chemistry." Some
of you may have already had some experience with Green Chemistry,
depending on which section of Chemistry 354 you took. Because this
section is experimental, you will be part of the experiment! There
may be some experiments that require some "on-the-fly" adjustments, there
may be other experiments that work very well, and there may be some
experiments that do not work at all. I hope that you will enjoy
being part of our plans to incorporate Green Chemistry experiments into
the organic curriculum. I rely on you to give me feedback on how
well the experiment is working and to make suggestions for changes and
improvements. I am looking forward to this quarter, and I hope that
you will enjoy this "research" opportunity, too.

Safety Quiz and Information
Each student is required to take and pass an organic chemistry laboratory safety quiz. This quiz is an on-line quiz, consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions. It is your responsibility to take and pass the safety quiz on your own time, during its scheduled times before Thursday, April 6, at 12:00 noon. If you cannot successfully pass the quiz, you will fail or be dropped from this course.

In order to pass during the first administration period, you must obtain a minimum passing score of 20 questions correct out of a total of 25 questions. In order to pass during the second administration period, you must answer at least 21 questions correctly. The minimum passing threshold during the third administration period is 22 questions correct out of a total of 25 questions. Failure to pass the safety quiz after three attempts means that you will not be able to continue in the class.
The safety quiz schedule is:
It is your responsibility to take and pass the safety quiz. No make-up quizzes will be given.
